A Balm for the Soul

Gilead was a region of ancient Palestine. This was the land that Moses was allowed to view before he died. It was a fertile land known for its balm, which was used for the healing of wounds.

In the book of Jeremiah, we find that God’s people have forsaken God’s laws and have turned to idol worship. This was a great concern for Jeremiah because he knew God would bring judgment to His people. In his great concern, he cried out: “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” (Jeremiah 8:22) The answer is that there was no repentance for their sins, no application of the balm for the soul was not applied.

Today, we see a world walking in the darkness of sin in need of a balm for healing. There is a balm; it is the balm of salvation administered by accepting Christ through faith, believing that He has paid the price for sin at Calvary.

Indeed, “There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole, there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.”

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)

God’s Promises for the New Year

As we ponder what the new year may hold, the believer in Christ can find peace in knowing that help comes from the Lord who gives promises of hope, guidance, and strength. Take joy in these promises.

There is HOPE for the journey.

“The eye of the Lord is upon them that fear Him, upon them that HOPE in His mercy.” Psalm 33:18

“This I recall to my mind; therefore, have I HOPE. It is of the Lord’s mercy that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23

“Blessed is the man whose HOPE is in the Lord.” Jeremiah 17:7

Also, our Lord promises to be the GUIDE for the journey.

“For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our GUIDE even unto death.” Psalm 48:14

“Thy God shall GUIDE thee continually and satisfy thy soul in drought and made fat thy bones, and thou shall be a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” Isaiah 58:11

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will GUIDE thee with Mine eye.” Psalm 32:8

Indeed, our Lord will give STRENGTH as we travel.

“Trust in the Lord forever for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting STRENGTH.” Isaiah 26:4

“It is God that girdeth me with STRENGTH, and maketh my way perfect.” Psalm 18:30

“Fear not for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God I will STRENGTHEN thee; yea, I will help thee; yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10

The Lord knows the way through 2021, and He will be our HOPE which gives encouragement, our GUIDE which gives peace, and our STRENGTH which gives endurance.

Travel on; our Lord knows the way!

Heavenly Communication

Today communication is possible through many different means. How many times do we communicate with others throughout the day? God the Creator of communication desires to communicate with us. This is possible through prayer and the Bible. God speaks through His Word, the Bible, and we speak to Him through prayer.

The Bible is no ordinary book. Its author is God. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (II Timothy 3:16)

The Bible contains sixty-six books recorded by a variety of men, yet it has a unity that can be explained only by the fact that its writers were all inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible’s purpose is to give God’s message to the world. The Bible’s theme is the redemption of man.

This Book is a precious, perfect, powerful book of history, law, poetry, wisdom, and prophecy which engages its readers with stories of love, adventure, wars, suffering, heroes, friendship, greed, dedication, sacrifice, and much more.

Word pictures give insight to personal testimonies of what the Bible is:

In John 4:14, Christ presents the Word as SEED, which when planted in the heart of unbelievers and is received, will result in that person’s salvation.

In Jeremiah 15:16, Jeremiah says that the word is the “JOY and rejoicing of the heart.”

In Psalm 119:105, the writer declares: “Thy Word is a LAMP unto my feet and a Light unto my path.” In other words, the Word gives understanding and shows the way to journey through this life.

In Jeremiah 20:9, Jeremiah describes the Word as a FIRE that cannot be hidden but must be shared with others.

Volumes may be written about the Bible, but only when its pages are opened and its words read, will the reader understand the life changing power of God’s Word, the Bible.

“The Bible is a book in comparison with which all others are of minor importance and which in all my perplexities and distress has never failed to give me light and strength.”
Robert E. Lee

An Able Guide for the Journey

“O Lord, by all Thy dealings with us, while of light or darkness, of joy or pain, let us be brought to Thee. It is He to whom and with whom we travel, and while He is the end of our journey, He is also at every stopping place.”

This prayer written by Phillips Brooks in the mid eighteen hundreds, has meaningful application for Christians today. That the Creator of all things and He who has all power chooses to have dealings with us gives comfort and security. The Lord’s dealings may come in times of light and joy or in times of darkness and pain. The important result should be that the Lord’s dealings in our lives draw us to Him.

During times of light and joy, let us be drawn to Him in prayers of thanksgiving and praise. When we journey in darkness and pain, let us claim His promises of help and love. The Lord gives a steadfast promise in Jer. 31:3 where He declares:

I have loved you with an everlasting love.

As we journey to Him, we also journey with Him. We never walk alone because the Lord Eternal hears, listens, and cares. Indeed, our Lord is at every stopping place along this journey home.
